| Getting Around Bangkok
Bangkok has a well-run bus system that has routes that hit most of the popular tourist attractions. There is also a sky train, an elevated train system that began carrying passengers in 1999. Although this is now a relatively small system, more lines are being planned. A subway system is also under construction.
Small three-wheeled vehicles are common throughout Thailand. These are called saamlaw, and they may or may not be motorized. The motorized version is more common; tourists tend to call them "tuk-tuks" after the sound made by their noisy two-stroke engines. These are often used to carry people back and forth around the city; passengers should establish the price -- by barter, if necessary -- before the ride begins. The price for a ride is often about the same as a taxi, but tuk-tuks tend to be faster than cars because they can weave in and out around the traffic of the city. Another alternative to the taxis on Bangkok streets is the motorcycle taxi.
Thai Boxing
There are two stadiums in Bangkok that features muay thai, Thai boxing. A typical evening will have 12 bouts of five rounds each. The final three fights are the headline events.
Bangkok Markets
There are a number of markets around the city featuring a wide variety of clothes, household goods, toys, and food. The Chatuchak Market, or Weekend Market, held in the northern part of the city each Saturday and Sunday, has as many as 15,000 stalls serving up to 200,000 people a day. There are a number of markets in the Phahurat and Chinatown districts. Additionally, the Pak Khlong market, near the river, is a daily source for both flowers and vegetables.
Bangkok Nightlife
Bangkok got the reputation for being somewhat rowdy in the 1960s and 1970s when American servicemen came to the city on R&R trips from Vietnam. Things have calmed down somewhat, though the Th Khao San tourist area has a reputation for being one continuous outdoor party. There are a variety of bars, restaurants, pubs, discos, dance clubs, and other places to eat and drink throughout the city. There is also a very strong live music scene. There are also several blocked-off areas dedicated to go-go bars, whose customers are only men.
